Chef released from prison after five nights on remand for drug possession

By Breaking Belize News Staff: After spending five nights on remand at the Belize Central Prison, 32-year-old Eldy Jane Taylor, a chef from the Krooman Road area of Belize City, is home again. Taylor was among four individuals charged with possession of controlled drugs following a police search at #34 Hemsley Street in the Fabers Road area last week.

The search, conducted on November 27, 2024, led to the discovery of 85.1 grams of cannabis, resulting in Taylor, 24-year-old Leon Anthony Lodge, his mother, 51-year-old Juliet Diane Richards, and his sister, 31-year-old Shanice Brown, being charged. Brown, who is deaf-mute, was also implicated.

Although Lodge initially attempted to take responsibility for the drugs, his guilty plea was rejected by the court, which advised him to seek legal counsel. Consequently, all four defendants were remanded after being offered bail of $3,000 each.

While Lodge was able to post bail on the day of the arraignment, Richards and Brown were released two days later on November 29. Taylor, however, remained in custody until yesterday morning when she finally met her bail requirements.

The group is scheduled to return to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on January 9, 2024, where their case will continue in Court #6.
