By Breaking Belize News Staff: Wilford Selvin Dawson, a 40-year-old resident of Gardenia Village, is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being unable to post bail for traffic offenses. Dawson appeared before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court late yesterday, where he was charged with failing to provide a specimen and driving without a valid Belize driver’s license.
The charges stem from an incident on Monday, December 6, 2024, on the Philip Goldson Highway near Sandhill. Police allege that Dawson, driving a grey 2017 Toyota Hilux, was suspected of being under the influence. When required to provide a urine sample, he refused. Additionally, it was revealed that Dawson’s driver’s license had expired, though he claimed to have paid for its renewal through the bank but had not yet received it.
Dawson pleaded not guilty to both charges. He admitted to having consumed alcohol earlier in the day but denied the allegations of non-compliance and driving without a valid license.
The Magistrate granted Dawson bail of $600 with conditions, including attending all court dates and avoiding further traffic offenses. However, Dawson was unable to meet the bail requirements, citing a lack of family support, and was remanded.
His next court appearance is scheduled for January 23, 2025, in Court #4.
