By Aaron Humes: 250 Belizean families countrywide who may not otherwise be able to afford it get the pleasure of a Christmas meal courtesy of the employees and staff of Bowen and Bowen Limited.
The company’s annual “Jingle Box” initiative enters its 15th year, with representatives of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society; World Pediatric Center; Belize Cancer Society; Saint Martin de Porres Roman Catholic Parish; the Women’s Department; Hand in Hand Ministries and HelpAge Belize collecting their boxes at Bowen’s King Street headquarters Tuesday morning.
“Some of these NGOs we’ve been working with for years, and we understand that they have the network, they are working across the country. They’re very familiar with these families that are in need. And so, we partner with them. We give them each a certain number of boxes, and they are the ones who send them out, and make sure they get delivered. We couldn’t do this without them. Definitely. We can’t do it on our own. We are super, super thankful that they partner with us each year and assist us in getting the Jingle Boxes,” explained Rosanna Villanueva, Bowen’s corporate relations manager, who added that the company annually matches the money raised by staff. This year that amount was its highest ever, and the Coca-Cola Company based in Atlanta, Georgia, which licenses production of Coca-Cola and related products to Bowen, has donated for several years as well.
The boxes contain an average list of grocery items including rice, coconut milk, a gift certificate for buying meat at Quality Poultry Products, and of course Coca-Cola and Minute Maid juices – all the ingredients for a Christmas meal for families that would not be able to otherwise afford them.
Various representatives of the partner NGOs say they have already earmarked or are working on their list of deserving recipients. Monica Heredia, Volunteer & Youth Development Manager, Belize Red Cross, said, “this year, with the 15 boxes that we are receiving, we are going to support the families that were affected by flooding. As you know, the villages in the district and some parts of the Belize River valley, they were affected by the recent flooding. And so our volunteers and staff are currently out in the Belize River Valley area doing assessments. And through those assessments, we will identify the 50 most in need to support them with these boxes.”
Yareli Pariente, representing the Roman Catholic Society of Saint Vincent De Paul, indicated that their allocation will go to shut-ins and those with disabilities, while Sonia Byrne of the Belize Cancer Society Belmopan branch, says they will identify the neediest of those affected by flooding in the Maya Mopan, J and W and Salvapan areas.
For those able to afford other Bowen products such as soft drinks and beer, be sure to check in with your local sales center as hours will be convenient for pick up and delivery. For more information on opening hours check out Bowen’s Facebook page.
