Caye Caulker Ocean Academy mourns Alexander Bainton

By Aaron Humes: This evening the Caye Caulker Ocean Academy (OA) issued a formal remembrance of Alexander Bainton, who died just after eight this morning, months away from his graduation.

Bainton, also known as “Footy,” was one of several students injured in a rollover accident on the Philip Goldson Highway on November 29 while en route to play in the regional secondary schools’ basketball tournament.

The school’s statement explains, “Alex… radiated light, love, kindness and joy to everyone he knew. He filled every room with his bright smile and positive energy. Alex was loved for the mentoring and encouraging role he took with his friends and family as he willingly shared advice to anyone in need. His maturity, wisdom, and sensitivity emanated as an old soul, unmatched at his age. OA teachers, staff, and administrators loved and respected Alex and awarded him one of OA’s most prestigious annual awards, the Ka’ana OA Outstanding Student Award, for his exceptional, positive, and resilient leadership on the OA campus.”

Alex was an honor roll student and on scholarship and “excelled as a student, basketball player, brother, son, friend, and human being.”

Several other students and teachers also remain hospitalized as La Isla Cariñosa both grieves and prays for them to pull through.
