New Permanent residents granted status through Belize’s flagship Amnesty Program

Posted: Friday, December 6, 2024. 3:12 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Prime Minister John Briceno and Filippo Grandi – High Commissioner of the UNHCR presented permanent residency cards to 17 asylum seekers – 3 families, men, women, and children.

“Through the decades, Belize has made meaningful positive impact for migrants and refugees.

The new permanent residents currently reside within our Cayo and Orange Walk communities,” the Prime Minister said.

The new permanent residents applied to the Ministry of Immigration under the Government of Belize’s flagship amnesty program.

This initiative offers undocumented residents, who have already been contributing to our society, the opportunity to regularize their status without fear of adverse immigration consequences.

Irregular migration is a global challenge, and while the instinctive reaction is to take a hardline stance, Belize is leading the way with a more compassionate approach.
