Senior Courts indicate it will close as per normal amid reports about Chief Justice

By Aaron Humes: A notice to the Bar Association from Registrar of the Senior Courts of Belize Trienia Young issued late on Thursday informs that the Judiciary will close the legal year on December 20, entering Christmas vacation.

Registrar Young informs Bar Association President William A. Lindo that Chief Justice Louise Blenman had not instructed an early closure of the High Court before the traditional end of the legal year as provided for in the Civil Procedure Rules. Rule 3.3 of the CPR sets the courts’ Christmas vacation dates, inclusive, from December 23 to January 10. December 23 is conveniently a Monday and January 10, 2025, is a Friday, meaning the court can open as per tradition on the second Monday in January – January 13.

Urgent applications will be addressed during the Court break as normal and Young emphasizes that “all High Court matters before the respective Justices of the High Court will proceed as per schedule and that the Belize Senior Court will continue its daily function.”

The notice comes amid reports that the Chief Justice has asked that each judge prepare detailed end-of-year reports on their disposal of cases.

Court staff say the Chief Justice, who was appointed in 2022, has been hinting at applying to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) when a vacancy arises next year.
