By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Abelardo Mai, emphasized the need to facilitate the movement of agricultural products from Belize to Mexico during his meeting with Mexico’s newly appointed Secretary of Agriculture, Dr. Julio Berdegué Sacristán, on Monday, December 8th, 2024, in Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico.
Minister Mai highlighted that Belize currently exports only $8-$10 million worth of goods to Mexico, while importing over $300 million from Mexico. The discussions focused on addressing this trade imbalance and exploring ways to increase Belize’s exports to Mexico.
Dr. Berdegué expressed Mexico’s interest in reducing the cost and technical barriers to formal trade, aiming to increase the import of agricultural products from Belize. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said this meeting marks a significant step towards enhancing trade relations and economic cooperation between the two countries.
Minister Mai also discussed the cattle trade and Belize’s intention of exporting five million green coconuts per year to Mexico. Dr. Berdegué said Mexico is interested in reducing the cost and technical barriers to the formal trade of cattle in an attempt to increase the import of cattle from Belize and also promised to respond to Belize’s intention of increasing green coconut exports.
