Man detained by police charged for crack he says he found in holding cell

Posted: Tuesday, December 10, 2024. 6:11 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Travis Tyler Navarro, an entrepreneur known for selling natural juices, was charged on Monday with possession of a controlled drug after being found with a small quantity of suspected crack cocaine at the Queen Street Police Station.

Navarro, 32, a resident of Handyside Street, was detained earlier in the day when the substance was discovered in a corner of the cell block area. Despite the amount being too minimal to register on a scale, Navarro admitted during the court hearing that he had taken possession of the plastic bag found in the cell.

“I had it; hence why I am taking responsibility,” Navarro stated in court. However, his guilty plea was rejected by the Senior Magistrate, who noted that his statement suggested a possible defense. Instead, an equivocal plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf.

Navarro, who appeared unrepresented, was offered bail of $800 plus one surety of the same amount. As a condition of his release, he must report to the Queen Street Police Station every Friday, starting December 13, 2024, until the case concludes. The matter has been adjourned to February 10, 2025, when Navarro will have the opportunity to present his defense.

This charge adds to Navarro’s previous run-ins with the law as he awaits his day in court.
