By Breaking Belize News Staff: A clash between two men that escalated into a physical altercation involving a metal shovel ended amicably in court on Monday after the pair, who recently discovered they are related, agreed to settle their differences.
Paul Nigel Smith, 20, an unemployed resident of Fourth Street, and Benyahti Jareak Brandon, 25, a wildlife personnel from First Street, appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 to face separate charges stemming from their December 5, 2024, fight. Brandon faced charges of aggravated assault and wounding after allegedly injuring Smith’s right hand with a metal shovel. Smith was charged with common assault on Brandon.
During the hearing, both men expressed their desire to drop the charges and move forward peacefully. Smith told the court, “I wah drop the charges against Brandon because we dah God brothers, and we talk things over and came to a mutual agreement.” Brandon echoed similar sentiments, adding, “We find out we related.”
The prosecutor, taking their wishes into account, offered no further evidence. The Senior Magistrate subsequently dismissed all charges, allowing the men to walk free.
Smith, whose hand remained bandaged from the incident, was represented by attorney Ronell Gonzalez. Notably, the men were brought to court in handcuffs but left together in good spirits after the case concluded.
The incident, which took place last Thursday in La Democracia Village, has now been resolved without further legal action, as both parties committed to peace moving forward.
