By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The death toll from contaminated IV feeding bags in central Mexico has risen to 17, with four additional deaths confirmed.
The victims, mostly underweight and premature infants, were receiving treatment in hospitals, with one victim being a 14-year-old child.
Authorities suspect that two bacteria, including a multidrug-resistant strain, were responsible for the deaths, AP reports.
The contamination is believed to have occurred at a manufacturing plant in Toluca, which has since been shut down, and the use of the IV bags halted.
The first infections were reported in late November, with the last case identified on December 3. Around 20 others have been infected and are being treated.
The outbreak involved two specific bacteria, Klebsiella oxytoca and Enterobacter cloacae, which caused blood infections in the children. The deaths were reported in the State of Mexico, Michoacan, and Guanajuato, all linked to the same contaminated product.
In response, the Mexican government has ordered doctors to stop using the affected IV bags.
