Government introduces amendment to PUC Regulations in declaring electricity emergency

By Aaron Humes: Minister of Public Utilities, Michel Chebat, laid on the table in the House of Representatives papers related to the electricity regime.

The Public Utilities Commission (Request for Proposals) (Amendment) Regulations, 2024, establishes two pathways for the declaration of an emergency related to electricity generation.

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) will be empowered to declare such an emergency; alternatively, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) would be similarly empowered with approval from the Minister.

BEL has indicated that average power needs in 2025 will hit 137 kilowatthours, six percent more than in 2024. While it has increased available sources by 33 megawatts with the installation of gas turbines in San Pedro Town and at Mile 8 in West Lake, it wants to speed up the selection of new sources of electricity to guard against potential failures due to expected issues with Mexico.
