By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño rose to address the House on the aftermath of last Saturday’s tragic triple vehicle accident that claimed ten lives and left a couple injured.
He revealed that there have been 108 fatalities in traffic accidents so far this year, of which 50 involved motorcyclists.
The Attorney General has been asked, he announced, to conduct a thorough review of legislation on road safety, including use of alcohol – even suggesting that accidents caused by drunk drivers could be charged as murder and not manslaughter.
Enforcement will be stepped up by the Department of Transport, especially at night, and legislation will be amended for use of breathalyzers, speed guns and dash cams.
The P.M. asked for prayers not only for the victims and survivors and their loved ones but also for the first responders who have been left to deal with their own issues as a result of what they saw, and gave thanks that politics has been left out – except for some prematurely posting pictures of the deceased on social media.
Too many are dying, and much of it can be avoided, the P.M. said, whether by consuming less alcohol (despite more than 200 arrested by Police), or by being less impatient and reckless, citing an unreported incident in Cotton Tree District that he witnessed personally on Monday.
In the end, it is up to all of us, he said, to spearhead change – the power rests in our hands. The lives lost already must not be statistics but a reminder of the importance of being safe..
