CONTRIBUTED: In December 2023, the Government of Belize acquired the Port of Belize. Following this acquisition, the Port of Belize initiated a series of improvement projects aimed at upgrading its facilities. One of the key areas targeted for enhancement was the Low-Berth facility, which serves as the primary hub for marine cargo traffic to offshore locations. This facility is critical for infrastructure expansion in areas of the country that are remote from the mainland.
Significant improvements have been made to enhance access for boats, barges, and tugs. Dredging of the berth area has been completed, and the access infrastructure, including the main road leading to the facility, has been upgraded.
Recent enhancements have also enabled the Pilot Boats belonging to the Port of Belize to dock directly at the port, rather than at separate privately held location. This change has significantly improved the efficiency of pilot operations, especially in light of the increased demands during the Christmas season and the rise in tourist cruise vessels.
The year 2024 has ushered in palpable changes at the Port of Belize. The ongoing improvements to this vital national logistics hub are set to positively impact the lives of Belizeans. As the Port looks ahead to 2025, it remains committed to a persistent plan of action aimed at better serving the needs of this growing nation.
