By Aaron Humes: King Charles III, speaking from Fitzrovia Chapel in central London, has paid tribute to those who serve on this and many other days.
This day, the monarch said, we think of those in harm’s way and are reminded of the example of Jesus, who lived and worked among those he tried to save, a message that echoes through all faiths to bring light where there is darkness.
The degree to which we help and support each other is a measure of our civilization and humanity, he said, paying tribute personally to those assisting him and his daughter-in-law, Catherine, Princess of Wales, in his cancer battle and those who have issued kind words to him and his family.
“From a personal point of view, I offer special, heartfelt thanks to the selfless doctors and nurses who, this year, have supported me and other members of my family through the uncertainties and anxieties of illness, and have helped provide the strength, care and comfort we have needed,” the King said.
The King mentioned his visit to Samoa for the Commonwealth Summit, stating that he was reminded “of the strength which institutions, as well as individuals, can draw from one another,” and of “how diversity of culture, ethnicity and faith provides strength, not weakness.” In Britain itself, in the wake of destructive riotous anti-immigrant behavior, he singled out for praise those who came out to make repairs, not only to structures, but also to relationships.
The message, broadcast on major television stations in the UK and traditionally around the world in the afternoon British time, ended with a performance of the carol “Once in Royal David’s City,” which the King also quoted.
The pre-recorded speech was the first filmed anywhere other than Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle since 2010. The tradition of a monarchial address at Christmas dates back to a radio broadcast by King George V, the King’s great-grandfather, in 1932 for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
Earlier on Wednesday, Charles, Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and other royals attended a Christmas Day church service at Sandringham, where the British monarch usually spends the winter holiday.
It emerged last week that Prince Andrew, the king’s younger brother, would not join the annual gathering after reports about his links to a man suspected of spying for China.
