By Breaking Belize News Staff: In a peculiar case, 19-year-old Elsworth Talbert, a resident of Wagner’s Lane, appeared in Belize City Magistrate’s Court #4 this week to face an unusual charge of possessing a utensil for smoking drugs.
Police allege that on Friday, December 20, 2024, Talbert was found on Handyside Street in possession of a blue plastic straw reportedly used for drug consumption. Talbert, however, refuted the charge in court, stating that the straw was a regular plastic item and denying any connection to drug use.
The police informed the court that the straw had been sent to the National Forensic Laboratory for testing to determine whether it was indeed used for illegal substances. As a result, the case was adjourned until February 24, 2025, pending the lab results.
Talbert pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail of $700, which he met. However, he also owed the court $1,000 in a separate matter. He was ordered to pay $300 immediately, which he did, and given an additional month to settle the remaining $700.
The case continues as authorities await forensic confirmation regarding the controversial blue straw.
