By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico has detained nearly 475,000 migrants heading to the U.S. between October 1 and December 26, authorities reported on Friday.
The surge in detentions follows U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on Mexico unless it halts illegal migration, Reuters report.
With around 900,000 migrants detained this year, Mexican authorities have ramped up enforcement, especially toward the end of 2023.
Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente highlighted that Mexico’s efforts have led to an 81% drop in migrant detentions at the U.S. border compared to last year.
The increased detentions align with commitments made by Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, who discussed immigration control measures with Trump in November following the tariff threat.
