By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Kaya Cattouse is gearing up to compete in the 34th Annual KREM New Year’s Day Cycling Classic on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, with hopes of securing her fifth victory in this prestigious event.

Last year, Belize’s top woman cyclist won her fourth KREM Classic, finishing ahead of American Mary Joyce Monton of the Austin Outlaws and G-Flow’s Gabrielle Gabourel. Junior winner, Griga Cycling’s Arielle Gordon, finished fourth.

Kaya could have won five already but in 2022 she set up Gabourel for the victory.

Kaya has now won the New Year’s Classic in 2012, 2019, 2023, 2024. She finished second five times, from 2015 to 2018, and in 2022. In 2025, she will again have to fend off Monton, who is now representing the Blazers.

The Open Women’s race, organized by KREM Radio in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of Belize (CFB) under the regulations of the International Cycling Union (UCI), will start at 9:30 a.m. in front of the Town Hall in Orange Walk Town. Cyclists will navigate a 54-mile route along the Philip Goldson Highway, culminating in Belize City in front of Super Store on Central American Blvd.

This race promises to be fiercely competitive as riders push their limits to claim victory and make their mark in the cycling community.
