By Aaron Humes: A passenger jet crash in South Korea on Sunday morning has left 177 of the 179 individuals on board presumed dead, with only two crew members rescued from the wreckage.
Jeju Air flight 2216, a Boeing 737, was landing at Muan International Airport around 9 a.m. local time when it veered off the runway and crashed into a wall, ABC News reports via KABC-TV, Los Angeles. Muan is a city of approximately 90,000 residents located in southwest South Korea.
The flight originated from Bangkok, Thailand, with 175 passengers and six crew members aboard. The National Fire Agency reported that the death toll has steadily risen, with additional details emerging from the ongoing investigation into the crash. Just before the accident, the control tower warned of a possible bird strike; shortly thereafter, the pilot sent a mayday signal.
Witness videos indicated that the plane may have landed with its landing gear retracted and at high speed, leading to a catastrophic crash that resulted in a large fire and heavy smoke. By 1 p.m. local time, the aircraft had completely burned, prompting authorities to set up a temporary morgue at the airport.
As of the latest reports, 176 bodies have been accounted for, including 83 women and 82 men, with 11 remaining unidentified. The two survivors, a man and a woman who are both crew members have been hospitalized, but their conditions have not been disclosed.
Jeju Air, a low-cost carrier operating an all-Boeing fleet, expressed deep condolences for the incident and assured that they would work to resolve the situation. Boeing has also reached out to offer support to Jeju Air during this tragic event.
