By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Border arrests in December remained close to November’s figures, with about 44,000 arrests reported as of Monday, AP reports.
This marks the sixth consecutive month of lower-than-average arrests, signaling that the anticipated surge ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration has not materialized.
The December total suggests that arrests will remain near the lowest levels since July 2020, closing out President Biden’s term with a significant drop from the 250,000 recorded in December 2023.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas attributed the decrease to effective asylum restrictions and strong border enforcement, along with collaboration with international partners.
The Rio Grande Valley in Texas became the second-busiest corridor for illegal crossings, while San Diego remained the busiest.
For the second month, legal entries through official border crossings exceeded arrests for illegal crossings, reflecting Biden’s focus on expanding legal pathways while restricting illegal crossings.
Trump, set to take office on January 20, has vowed to reinstate mass deportations and possibly end the CBP One appointment system.
