By Aaron Humes: Coming in at under eight minutes, Prime Minister John Briceño’s New Year’s Address was abbreviated to say the least, but as he seeks a second term, it was full of valedictions for the “big wins” Belizeans have made in 2024 and during his term of office.
“2024 has truly been a year of Belizean triumph,” the Prime Minister boasted, expanding on his sworn pledge that “Optimism and opportunity will propel all Belizeans to win.”
According to the Prime Minister, the vast majority of those seeking employment can find well-paying jobs, those making less than $29,000 are paying no income tax and no general sales tax (GST) is charged on property transfers and mortgages. No Belizean is paying costs at Government health care facilities; entrepreneurs can get tax exemptions and lower duties.
Inflation is coming down (2.1 percent in December), following Government measures such as subsidies for bakers and transport companies, cracking down on price gouging, and in December, a tax holiday covering the weekends before Christmas where GST was not charged for certain goods – which will cost the Government about $5 million for the month.
The hard work continues in 2025 even as his administration prepares to once again seek the support of the Belizean people to continue in office. Briceño vowed to continue reducing poverty, making more land and housing available; starting the University Hospital in Belmopan; finish the expansion of National Health Insurance (NHI) and education and infrastructure across the country.
“Belize is better positioned than ever before to soar to impressive heights,” the P.M. said, becoming not just a destination for tourism but also for investment, retirement and as a bridge to Mexico, CARICOM and Central America. The Belizean spirit has been renewed and optimism is higher now than it was four years ago, but the Government is cognizant of the need to lead by example and Briceño offered a promise to lift institutional standards.
“We remain confident that the best version of Belize lies ahead of us, and with the guidance of our Creator, we will move forward,” P.M. Briceño concluded as he extended best wishes for the New Year.
