Belizean volleyball star Khaya Gordon signs with NCAA Division I Clemson University

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Nineteen-year-old Belizean volleyball sensation Khaya Gordon is making waves as she officially joins the NCAA Division I Clemson University volleyball team, competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in the United States. Alongside her athletic pursuits, Gordon will be majoring in civil engineering, adding another dimension to her impressive journey in volleyball.

“Belize, let’s celebrate a monumental achievement!” the BK Sport Group said on December 31, 2024.

“This is an incredible milestone for our country, as Khaya becomes the first homegrown athlete in over 25 years to play a team sport at a major NCAA Division I program. Her hard work, determination, and passion have paved the way for this historic moment, proving that Belizean talent can shine on the biggest stages.

“Khaya’s success is not just her own—it’s an inspiration to young athletes across Belize. It shows what’s possible with dedication and support, and it reminds us all that the sky is the limit for our Belizean stars.”

Known for her attacking skills, Gordon started out at the volleyball powerhouse school, St. Catherine’s Academy, in Belize City. Excelling for the Belize Women’s Volleyball team, Gordon moved on with a scholarship to Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas, United States, with the assistance of the BK Sports Group.

Now, Gordon embarks on an exciting journey with the Clemson University Tigers in Clemson, South Carolina, a team that competes in one of the most challenging and competitive college volleyball conferences in the U.S. Her decision to study civil engineering alongside her athletic pursuits is representative of her commitment to achieving excellence both on and off the court.

Gordon’s full scholarship to Clemson University is a testament to her incredible potential and the bright future ahead of her.

Gordon will be joining the Clemson University’s women’s volleyball team that has been steadily improving over the past few years. In the 2024 season, under the leadership of head coach Jackie Simpson Kirr, the Tigers finished with a record of 10-17 overall and 2-14 in the ACC. Despite the challenges, standout performances from players like Azyah Dailey have highlighted the team’s potential.

One of Clemson’s highest achievements in women’s volleyball was reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2018, where they made a strong showing and advanced to the second round.

With Khaya Gordon joining the team, Clemson University’s volleyball program looks forward to building on its past successes and aiming for even greater heights in the future.
