By Aaron Humes: Hattieville, Belize District resident Glenda Pop was due to deliver her second child on Friday, but the youngster had other – earlier – plans.
Baby Pop – unnamed as of this writing – entered the world at 12:15 a.m. New Year’s Day at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) in Belize City, arriving full term and weighing 6 pounds and 3 ounces.
Glenda checked into the hospital on December 31 at 8:00 p.m. with significant contractions. Estella Flowers, Unit Manager of the Maternity Ward at KHMH, noted that this year was unique with only one expecting mother in the maternity ward, while in years past, they typically accommodated several. “We were expecting more deliveries, as usual, but it turned out Miss Glenda Pop was our only patient. She was fully dilated right at midnight and it was a smooth delivery thanks to our wonderful nursing staff,” said Flowers.
Glenda Pop expressed her joy, stating, “I feel good, I feel proud. Right now, he joins the family with us, and I’m happy for it.” This will be her last, she was quick to point out.
As part of a tradition of corporate responsibility, Santiago Castillo Limited presented care packages to the firstborn, which are distributed to newborns on New Year’s in hospitals throughout the country.
Aisha Trapp, Marketing Manager, explained, “We celebrate not just the baby born at KHMH but also those born in other public hospitals. We want to ensure every newborn begins the year with a special gift.”
Trapp confirmed that other newborns were welcomed across the country, with San Ignacio registering a baby boy born just two minutes after midnight, and Dangriga reporting the arrival of three babies, including two girls and one boy.
The celebration of new life brings hope and happiness to families as they start the year with their little ones, reminding the community of the joys and miracles that come with each new beginning.
