By Horace Palacio: The year 2025 has begun with a tragic incident as the Belize Police Department investigates its first homicide. The victim, 59-year-old Godfrey Winfield Hyde, was discovered lifeless at a camp on Turneffe Island.
On Saturday afternoon, authorities responded to reports of a body at the island camp. Upon arrival, they found Hyde, a caretaker stationed on the island, lying face down on the veranda of a wooden bungalow with two gunshot wounds.
A fisherman delivering supplies to Hyde made the discovery and alerted nearby Coast Guard personnel. Scenes of crime technicians recovered one expended shell from the scene.
Police are investigating the murder but have yet to determine a motive. No arrests have been made at this time.
Authorities urge anyone with information related to this case to come forward.
