By Aaron Humes: A man acquitted of murder faces charges of wounding and use of deadly means of harm following a fight on New Year’s Day, Wednesday.
34-year-old Emerson Herman Garnett aka “Jimbo” reversed his guilty plea to not guilty for the offenses of wounding and use of deadly means of harm on Friday when told he was going to jail.
Garnett is being accused of stabbing 28-year-old Mervin Martin of Antelope Street Extension, Belize City three times to the body. He appeared before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola, entered a guilty plea and immediately begged the court for leniency and to impose a fine upon him.
Martin told police that at about 7:26 p.m. on Wednesday, the common-law wife of Garnett got into an argument with him, Martin, and Garnett allegedly intervened and stabbed him three times, to his chest area, neck and ear.
Garnett initially accepted the facts of the case after it was read out in court but decided to take his chances at trial.
With no objections to bail being offered to him by the Prosecutor, the Chief Magistrate offered him bail in the sum of $1,500 plus one surety of the same amount which he met. Garnett is due back in court on March 5.
Garnett was acquitted of murder in a case in 2023 where another man was convicted; however, he has picked up other charges since then.
