By Aaron Humes: 28-year-old Sorangel Desire Ayuso of Belize City potentially faces a High Court trial on charges of theft of $31,000 and claiming on a forged document – but she says the charges may be dropped.

Ayuso is accused of 13 counts of stealing a total of $31,000 from her aunt Adelita Ramirez, who runs a shop in Downtown Plaza on Albert Street, Belize City, between September and December of 2024, and 13 counts of claiming upon a forged document related to the theft.

Due to the nature of the offenses no plea was taken from Ayuso as the charges of theft and claiming upon a forged document will be tried on indictment if a preliminary inquiry finds sufficient evidence to proceed. Despite having no objection to bail, the Magistrate chose to remand Ayuso to the Central Prison until February 28.

At this point, Ayuso on her own behalf told the court that her aunt does want any court action against her, and claimed that she had visited the police station to say so, however her aunt was unable to be at court due to an emergency in El Salvador. She was informed that if that was the position of her aunt the virtual complainant, then Ramirez would have to visit the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)’s office and request such action.

Ayuso was accused of stealing multiple amounts on specific dates between September 18 and December 18, 2024, each time by withdrawing monies from the Holy Redeemer Credit Union (HRCU) in Ramirez’s name and allegedly taking the funds for herself.
