By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old Ladyville resident has been convicted of common assault after admitting to pushing and slapping his six-month-pregnant common-law wife during a domestic dispute.

Austin Alfred Hendy, a resident of Lords Bank, appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Belize City on Tuesday morning, where he pleaded guilty to the charge. The court heard that the incident occurred on January 2, 2024, when Hendy pushed and slapped his partner during an argument at their home. The victim told police this was not the first instance of such behavior, describing it as part of a continuous pattern of abuse.

While Hendy admitted to the assault, he disputed details, claiming he pushed his partner near the sofa, not onto the bed, as she alleged. Despite his disagreement, the court accepted his guilty plea.

The Senior Magistrate imposed a non-custodial sentence, ordering Hendy to keep the peace toward his common-law wife for three months. If he violates this condition, he will face immediate imprisonment or be required to pay a $300 fine. Additionally, Hendy was fined $300, plus $5 in court costs, with a payment deadline of March 3, 2025, or face three months in prison.

Hendy informed the court that while he is still residing with his common-law wife, he is seeking a new place to live.
