Belize’s political calendar heats up as PM hints at election timing

Posted: Thursday, January 9, 2025. 6:45 am CST.

By Horace Palacio: Prime Minister John Briceño has suggested the country’s general elections may occur in the first half of 2025, with widespread speculation pointing to March as a likely timeframe.

“I haven’t decided yet,” Briceño told reporters on Wednesday. “But I think it’s going to be more towards the first half of this year.”

Briceño affirmed his government’s intention to contest all 31 parliamentary seats, while also emphasizing the importance of respecting the democratic process. “At the end of the day, we have to respect the wishes of the Belizean people. If they give us the 31 seats, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”

The announcement has set the stage for a heightened period of political activity as parties prepare to engage voters. The Prime Minister has yet to confirm an exact date for the polls, but his remarks have prompted speculation about campaign timelines.

General elections in Belize, held every five years, determine the composition of the 31-member House of Representatives. Observers believe an official announcement regarding the election date could be imminent.
