By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Institute of Archaeology (IA) under the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) has issued important updates regarding tour activities at several archaeological reserves due to elevated river levels.
Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve: Due to persistently high river levels, all water-related tour activities at the Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve are suspended. The IA advises visitors to avoid water-based tours at this time for safety reasons.
Barton Creek Archaeological Reserve: Effective 8:00 am today, the Barton Creek Archaeological Reserve is open for regular operations. However, tour operators and guides are advised to exercise caution and remain alert. The IA recommended that only higher 4-wheel drive vehicles attempt the river crossing at this time. An earlier report had said activities were suspended.
Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Archaeological Reserve: Tours at the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Archaeological Reserve can resume. However, tour operators and guides are advised to exercise caution and remain alert.
Other Archaeological Reserves: All other archaeological reserves remain open for visits. The IA said it continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
The IA/NICH is committed to ensuring the safety of visitors and staff while providing opportunities to explore Belize’s rich cultural heritage. Visitors are encouraged to check with tour operators or the IA for the latest information before making travel arrangements.
