By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that the rise in respiratory illnesses, including human metapneumovirus (hMPV), in China and other Northern Hemisphere countries is typical for winter, Reuters report.
Reports of hMPV surges in China have raised concerns of overwhelmed hospitals, reminiscent of the early COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the WHO stated that it is in regular contact with Chinese officials and has found no signs of unusual outbreaks. The Chinese health system has not been overwhelmed, and no emergency responses have been triggered.
Data through December 29 show an increase in hMPV, seasonal flu, rhinovirus, and RSV, particularly in northern China. The WHO noted that such increases are common at this time of year.
hMPV usually causes mild cold-like symptoms but can lead to severe illness in vulnerable groups.
While cases have surged in multiple countries, including India and the UK, the WHO emphasized that this aligns with normal seasonal trends.
Researchers also suggest that improved diagnostics may be contributing to the rise in reported cases.
