By Aaron Humes: A third murder has been reported in just four days, and worryingly, this one happened near a school in gang territory in Belize City.
This evening Commissioner of Police Chester Williams told reporters that Police have traced the movements of the victim, Giovanni Ramirez, through the City today – he went to visit an attorney, then to a tire shop on Cemetery Road and was returning home when he was targeted. It suggests that his killers were following him.
No less than 12 shots were fired into the red Ford Explorer occupied by Ramirez on Amandala Drive, which crashed into a nearby fence. The attackers were reported to be two men on motorcycles.
Ramirez was the main witness in the abetment to murder trial in which attorney Oscar Selgado was convicted for soliciting an attack on a former client; he had sought not to appear in court in person as he was in fear of his life. He was himself accused of various crimes including being a gang member – charges he denied.
Commissioner Williams said all theories were being looked at but seemed skeptical that Selgado might have been involved as he is appealing his conviction and remains behind bars.
Persons of interest have been identified. At this time, there are no reported intentions of retaliation especially since it occurred in the middle of gang territory. However, the ComPol says the police will work to ensure that through their presence on the ground and using the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU) that peace remains.
