Retired landlord awaits trial for allegedly burglarizing his own property

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 58-year-old retired Ministry of Works employee remains behind bars as he awaits trial on a burglary charge involving a property he claims he owns and rents to the alleged victim.

Goldburn Calbert Tillett, of Pelican Street Extension, has been on remand at the Belize Central Prison since his arraignment on November 27, 2024, after being unable to meet his bail of $2,500. Despite spending Christmas and New Year in prison, Tillett maintains his innocence, arguing that the apartment in question is part of his property and that he only allowed the tenant to stay there out of goodwill.

Tillett is accused of entering the apartment at the same address on Pelican Street Extension as a trespasser and stealing $130 in cash. At his initial arraignment, he pleaded not guilty, asserting that it was impossible to burglarize his own property.

On Thursday in Court #5, Tillett was provided with nine pages of disclosure, including four photographs of the alleged crime scene. His trial is scheduled for April 16, 2025.

Until then, Tillett remains behind bars, unable to post bail. The court will ultimately decide whether the landlord-tenant dispute holds weight in the burglary allegations.
