By Aaron Humes: Earlier this week a second case of New World Screwworm was located in the village of San Pedro Columbia, Toledo District.
Minister of Agriculture Jose Mai indicated that investigations as to the origin of this case continue, but the probable causes are either infection by wildlife in the area or contact with infected livestock from Guatemala.
To head off the latter, inspection is now mandatory for all cattle moving from the area and virtually all farmers have been informed and warned not to accept cattle from outside Belize that has not been locally inspected.
Minister Mai said a new control point has been installed and the Ministry and it’s partners are redoubling their efforts to keep the parasite contained in Toledo and eventually eradicated.
Belize continues to enjoy the confidence of Mexico to export livestock subject to conditions of quarantine and inspection.
