By Aaron Humes, Corozal Free Zone, Corozal District: The Commercial Free Zone (CFZ) has completed the paving of a mile of road from the old Belize-Mexico bridge to its entrance, known to some as “The Last Mile.”
It means there is smoother access from Mexico, which sent more than 2.5 million vehicles into the Free Zone last year.
Agriculture Minister Jose Mai indicated that the CFZ has grown to over 300 businesses, employing more than 1,500 persons, with plans to incorporate manufacturing within the next 10 years.
Prime Minister John Briceño recalled having to make the difficult decision to reopen the Zone in the first few weeks of his administration amid the COVID-19 pandemic. But the bet he made that day has more than paid off, reinforcing the belief that planning and hard work will reap benefits.
The construction was done by RJB Construction with funding provided by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI)
