International News: 10 dead, 180,000 evacuated amid destruction in California wildfires

Posted: Friday, January 10, 2025. 9:33 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: At least 10 people have died, and 180,000 have been forced to evacuate as wildfires continue to ravage Southern California, NBC reports.

The blazes, fueled by dry conditions and powerful winds, have caused unprecedented destruction in areas not typically prone to fires.

The Palisades Fire has scorched nearly 20,000 acres, destroying an estimated 5,000 structures, with just 6% containment.

Another fire, the Kenneth Fire, broke out in Woodland Hills, prompting evacuations, though it was later contained.

The Eaton Fire in Pasadena has burned 13,690 acres and destroyed at least 4,000 structures, with no containment efforts reported as of last night.

Winds, which are expected to continue through Friday, are hampering firefighting efforts, and an evacuation alert mistakenly sent to 10 million L.A. residents added to the chaos.

Authorities are still assessing the full scope of the damage.
