By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico’s president has rejected President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” proposing instead that the U.S. be called “Mexican America,” USA Today reports.
During a news conference in Mexico City, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo referenced a 17th-century map and humorously pointed to the U.S. area, suggesting, “Why don’t we call this ‘Mexican America’?”
She also showcased historical maps showing Mexico’s vast territory, which once included large parts of what are now U.S. states.
Trump, speaking from his Mar-a-Lago residence, had announced plans to rename the Gulf, claiming, “We do most of the work there, and it’s ours,” but did not offer details on how or when the change would occur.
Sheinbaum Pardo’s comments reflect ongoing tensions between Mexico and Trump, especially regarding immigration issues. “It sounds pretty, no?” she added, in reference to her “Mexican America” idea.
