By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: President-elect Donald Trump has doubled down on his desire for the U.S. to acquire Greenland and the Panama Canal, calling both critical to American national security, BBC reports.
In a recent news conference, Trump was asked if he would rule out using military or economic force to take control of the territories.
He responded, “No, I can’t assure you on either of those two,” stressing the importance of both regions for economic security.
Trump has previously expressed interest in Greenland, a strategically important Arctic island, and the Panama Canal, accusing Panama of overcharging U.S. ships and alleging Chinese influence over the waterway.
Both Denmark and Panama have rejected Trump’s claims and any suggestion of territorial handover.
Trump also floated the idea of annexing Canada, criticizing imports and calling the border an “artificially drawn line,” but Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dismissed the notion, saying there was “no chance” of a merger.
While Trump’s remarks are raising eyebrows, it remains unclear how serious he is about pursuing territorial expansion, particularly given the legal and diplomatic hurdles involved.
