San Pedro icon and culinary pioneer Elvia Staines passes away at 92

By Horace Palacio: Elvia Staines, affectionately known as “Doña Elvia,” a beloved community figure and culinary pioneer in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye died today at the age of 92. Staines was the owner and driving force behind Elvi’s Kitchen, a renowned restaurant on the island.

Born in San Pedro on January 31, 1932, Staines dedicated her life to her family and her restaurant. She and her husband, Enrique Staines Sr., had six children. After his passing 23 years ago, she continued to helm Elvi’s Kitchen with her daughter, Jennie Pinelo.

Starting as a humble burger stand in 1974, Elvi’s Kitchen evolved into a celebrated seafood destination under Staines’ guidance. The restaurant’s iconic flamboyant tree, shading the dining area, became a symbol of its enduring legacy.

Elvi’s Kitchen garnered both national and international acclaim, including the prestigious International Gold Star Award for Quality and Excellence in 1996 and recognition from the Belize Tourism Board. Staines was also a dedicated humanitarian, serving with the Lions Club of San Pedro for over 25 years and receiving the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.

“Her passion for Belizean cuisine and her dedication to the people of San Pedro will forever be remembered,” the Belize Tourism Board said in a statement, acknowledging her contributions, including Elvi’s Kitchen’s Restaurant of the Year Award in 2022.

Staines is survived by her children and a community that deeply feels her loss. Her legacy of culinary excellence, community service, and warm hospitality will continue to inspire.
