International News: Mexico will find solution to avoid U.S. tariffs, Minister says

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico is determined to find a way to avoid US tariffs, Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Friday, in response to threats from President-elect Donald Trump.

Trump has vowed to impose tariffs if Mexico does not address migration and drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, at the border, Reuters report.

Ebrard, speaking in Mexico City, recalled similar threats during Trump’s first term that ultimately did not result in tariffs. “In the end, there were no tariffs… we found a way out,” Ebrard said, promising a similar resolution this time.

He argued that Trump’s tariff plans were unrealistic, noting the potential negative impact on the US economy.

Ebrard also responded to accusations that Mexico serves as a backdoor for Chinese goods, pointing to Mexico’s “Operation Clean-Up” crackdown on contraband and tariffs on textile imports.

Mexico is also working to diversify its trade, with the UAE exploring investments in Mexico’s semiconductor and renewable energy sectors.
