By Aaron Humes: Two Gardenia, Belize District residents have been remanded to prison after police reportedly discovered two firearms while at Queen’s Bond Shed at the Customs Department on Queen Charlotte Street, Belize City. Dinsdale Flowers, 53, and Irene Dawson, 55, have been charged with possessing firearms without a gun license and illicit trafficking of firearms. Both pleaded not guilty and have been remanded to prison until March 13.
Police were alerted by Customs personnel about the discovery of two semi-automatic rifles in parts inside six barrels and a box shipped into Belize under the name of Irene from Gardenia. Flowers and Dawson appeared this morning before a Senior Magistrate with their attorney, Orson “OJ” Elrington, to face charges of two counts of possessing firearms without a gun license and illicit trafficking of firearms.
According to police reports, on Thursday, January 9, while conducting patrols a police officer was summoned to the Customs & Excise Department. Upon arrival at Queens Bond Shed located on Queen Charlotte Street in the Customs compound around 3:15 p.m., a Customs & Excise officer informed the police that an elderly man had come to pick up six barrels and a wooden box. Upon inspection of the items, the Customs personnel discovered components of firearms inside the barrels.
The elderly man, identified as Flowers, was arrested by the police after they confirmed that the components were indeed parts of firearms. The police also processed the crime scene and took photographs of the components.
The barrels and wooden box were addressed to someone named Irene from Gardenia Village, which led police to investigate further and ultimately arrest Dawson.
