By Aaron Humes: In a startling turn of events, a police officer has been charged with theft after reportedly being caught on surveillance footage stealing from a businesswoman he was assigned to protect.

The accused, 52-year-old PC Peter Graham from the Mahogany Heights area, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola. During the hearing, he pleaded not guilty to the theft charge related to an incident on January 6, 2025, at the J&Y Block Factory located on Mahogany Street.

According to the prosecution, the business owner, a naturalized Belizean businesswoman, had reported that she discovered $550 missing from her office while PC Graham was present on special duty. Wang stated that after briefly leaving her office, she returned to find Graham behind her desk. When questioned, he claimed he was securing the padlock, as it had been left open.

Upon checking her belongings, Wang realized cash amounting to $550 was missing and promptly notified the officer. The incident was captured by the shop’s security camera, providing crucial evidence for the case.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution did not object to bail but requested specific conditions due to Graham’s status as an officer. Chief Magistrate Wegodapola granted Graham bail set at $1,500, requiring him to sign in every Monday at the Mahogany Heights Police Station. Additional conditions prohibit him from contacting Wang or any potential prosecution witnesses, and he must attend all scheduled court dates until the matter is resolved.

With bail secured, PC Graham is officially on interdiction as of today and is due back in court on March 13.

This case has raised concerns about the conduct of law enforcement officials, emphasizing the importance of accountability among those sworn to protect the community. PC Graham faces a show-cause letter as a result of his alleged actions.
