By Aaron Humes: Official ceremonies marking George Price Day are taking place at his family home located on Pickstock Street in Belize City.

To mark the occasion, a compilation of his letters held at the Belize Archives was launched, titled “Good Belizeans” from a quotation in one of them.

Price corresponded with many people over the years on various topics – Independence and national development chief among them, but also environmental issues, including planting trees around the Old Capital.

And speaking of trees, from an original Mahogany sapling planted the day of Independence in 1981, many others have grown. Minister of Education Francis Fonseca reported that with the consent of Price’s family, a botanical garden will be created with species of Belize’s flora.

Prime Minister John Briceño recalled learning at Price’s feet, being encouraged not to give up on the Party. He spoke sparsely but profoundly, with a clarity of words ahead of his time, but preferred to listen and offer hope and solutions – such as when he asked his Minister of Works Albert Cattouse to fix a seawall in erosion-plagued Monkey River, Toledo, in 1969 (without resorting to seeking more Government funds); thanking a housewife for delivering “delicious” sweet bread and cakes, or commending Sir Shridath Ramphal for Guyana’s defense of Belize’s right to Independence (he would later be a facilitator in an attempt to resolve the unfounded Guatemalan claim in 2002).

A street exhibit will open today showing the communications and other exhibits of Price’s legacy.
