By Casiana Lind-Sagastume: In an extraordinary achievement, Mopan Technical High School (MTHS) has secured third place in the highly competitive CARICOM Youth in Agriculture High School Video Competition. The school proudly stands as the only Belizean institution to place in the top three, highlighting its dedication to agricultural education and innovation.

The competition, organized by the CARICOM Secretariat in collaboration with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), saw Mil Academy from Antigua and Barbuda claim first place and Georgetown Secondary School from St. Vincent and the Grenadines take second. Mopan Technical High School’s third-place victory underscores its students’ creativity, passion, and commitment to addressing the future of agriculture.

This victory is even more significant given that MTHS is one of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science & Technology’s EUp schools, pioneering free education and free lunch programs for all students. These initiatives ensure that every student has the tools and support needed to excel, regardless of their background.

“We take great pride in this achievement and strive to embody our motto, “Caminando se abre camino.” We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has helped pave the way for our students and to our dedicated teachers who continue to do the same. It is essential to create opportunities that enable our students to recognize the significant impact agriculture can have on their lives and the health of our nation.” Principal Jones added.

The official award ceremony will be held virtually on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at 11:00 AM Eastern Caribbean Time, where MTHS will deliver remarks. This accomplishment serves as an inspiration to the nation, proving that Belizean students can achieve greatness on the regional stage.

Eight (8) other schools from Belize, namely Belize High School of Agriculture, Belmopan Methodist High School, Agriculture and Natural Resource Institute (ANRI), Independence High School, Alvin L. Young Nazarene High School, Ladyville Technical High School, Itz’at STEAM Academy and ITVET Toledo, participated in the competition and submitted videos of their school activity.

Congratulations to the students, teachers, and the entire MTHS community for this groundbreaking achievement!
