By Breaking Belize News Staff: A former Belize City resident, now living in Cayo, has pleaded guilty to an armed robbery dating back to June 2024.
William Archila, a 29-year-old construction worker from Martin Galvez Street in the Cayo District, appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #3 on Tuesday. He was charged with robbing a 35-year-old sales representative on June 21, 2024, at the corner of Lindos Alley and Vernon Street.
The allegations state that Archila used force to steal a black and gold purse valued at $60, which contained $115 in cash, two Social Security cards, and two debit cards. The robbery occurred early in the morning as the woman was walking along Vernon Street. After a brief struggle, Archila overpowered her and fled into Lindos Alley with the stolen items.
In court, Archila admitted to the crime, stating he had already confessed during a police interview. He explained that his guilty plea was intended to avoid wasting the court’s time and to take responsibility for his actions.
When asked if he wanted to call character witnesses, Archila requested that his girlfriend, who was present outside the court with their one-year-old daughter, be allowed to testify on his behalf. However, due to the presence of the young child, the sentencing was postponed until Friday, January 17, 2025.
Given the seriousness of the offense, Archila was remanded to the Belize Central Prison pending his sentencing. The court will determine an appropriate penalty during the upcoming hearing.
