By Aaron Humes: In a significant legal move, Opposition Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow is calling on the court to take action against prominent figures opposed to his leadership.
Barrow and his attorney Dr Christopher Malcolm are targeting Albert Area Representative Tracy Panton and Phillipa Griffith Bailey, seeking to impose restrictions on the respondents regarding the disclosure of sensitive information related to the United Democratic Party (UDP).
The request aims to prohibit Panton, Griffith Bailey, and their affiliates—including former leader John Saldivar, former Senator Sheena Pitts, former legal advisor and candidate Orson J. Elrington, and the media outlet Hot Off the Press—from publishing or discussing any details pertaining to the UDP’s headquarters, assets, leadership, and ongoing legal matters. Barrow’s legal team argues that this action is necessary to maintain the integrity of the court amidst a contentious leadership dispute within the party.
Barrow’s application highlights that the respondents have repeatedly violated court orders, particularly alleging that Panton has positioned herself as the interim leader of the UDP in public statements and social media posts. These actions, he contends, undermine the court’s authority and foster confusion regarding the leadership structure of the UDP during this critical period.
Furthermore, the application seeks to curtail any public communications or actions that might jeopardize the proceedings or create an impression of dual leadership within the party. Barrow’s attorney, Dr Malcolm, has formally requested that the contempt orders application filed back in December 2024 be heard alongside this more recent urgent court orders application, submitted on January 15, 2025.
Both sides had expressed interest in mediation, but Barrow had publicly maintained that Saldivar and former deputy leader Beverly Williams would not be allowed to run for the UDP and that if the party wished to welcome back Taegar-Panton and others it would be with him as leader, as he maintains the party’s National Convention has affirmed last year.
The matter is set for trial in March.
