By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Community Rehabilitation Department of the Ministry of Human Development, Families & Indigenous People’s Affairs has announced the availability of automatic expungement for certain first-time offenses under new provisions of the Criminal Records (Rehabilitation of Offenders) Act, 2024.

The amendment, which took effect on November 29, 2024, repeals and replaces section 30 of the Act, allowing individuals with no other criminal records to apply for expungement. Eligible offences include:

  • A first offence for possession of cannabis or cannabis resin under section 7 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, where the imposed fine does not exceed $1,000.
  • A first offence related to any COVID-19 violation.

The Community Rehabilitation Department encourages those who qualify to submit applications for this service, which aims to provide a fresh start for those with minor convictions.
