By Aaron Humes: In a historic move, the Biden administration has granted a posthumous pardon to Marcus Mosiah Garvey, a prominent civil rights activist and National Hero of Jamaica. This announcement has been warmly welcomed by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which has long advocated rectifying Garvey’s unjust conviction.

Mia Amor Mottley, Chairman of CARICOM and Prime Minister of Barbados, expressed profound gratitude for the decision in a statement. “This long-awaited exoneration is a testament to the unwavering advocacy of CARICOM leaders, both individually and collectively,” she said. “Today, we acknowledge the significance of Garvey’s contributions to the rights and liberties of individuals of African descent.”

Garvey, founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in the early 20th century, dedicated his life to uplifting people of African descent and promoting Pan-Africanism. His work laid the groundwork for future civil rights movements worldwide, and his philosophies continue to resonate within the African diaspora.

In 1923, Garvey was convicted of mail fraud for selling the stock of the Black Star Line company which he founded and he was imprisoned in the United States Penitentiary, Atlanta for nearly two years and subsequently deported to Jamaica, later emigrating to London where he died in 1940. Garvey blamed Jewish people and Catholic people, claiming that they were prejudiced against him because of his links to the Ku Klux Klan (KKK).

In her remarks, Mottley extended heartfelt congratulations to Garvey’s family, particularly to his son, Julius Garvey, and commended the Jamaican government and all who honor Garvey’s legacy. “His life and work continue to inspire and influence both within and beyond the Caribbean,” she noted.
