By Aaron Humes: Chief Justice Louise Blenman’s address opening the Legal Year 2025 was mostly positive, befitting a year in which she said the Belizean Judiciary had advanced in its service to the people.
Gone – or at least unmentioned – are the days of lean budgets, short staff, lengthy delays, poor working conditions and general malaise. The Judiciary has been whipped into shape with a raft of reforms to procedure on the civil side and in the Criminal Jurisdiction, most critically a reduction of both cash backlogs and inferior court appeals, although some issues persist.
The courts are paying more attention to training, professional development and understanding of the law and what it means to practice it, resulting in more satisfactory and timely judgments and a greater sense of accomplishment.
And the Chief Justice promises more of the same in 2025, renewing the commitment to actively pursuing justice for all.
