Police ‘looking forward’ to arresting wanted persons who may be deported from U.S., Commissioner says

By Aaron Humes: In the first hours of Donald Trump’s presidency, the contours of his immigration policy are taking shape, involving anticipated mass deportations.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says that among those Belizeans who may be returning are some the Police Department is interested in.

After congratulating the new President, Williams said, “We will wait to see who will be coming back. We certainly are looking forward to certain people coming back that are wanted by Police to face charges here in Belize, so we welcome that.”

There has been commentary that Belize’s lower crime and particularly murder rates in 2023 and 2024 are supposedly a result of members of the underworld leaving Belize “through the back” for the U.S. and seeking asylum.

The Department is the official agency in charge of processing and managing deportees so some could well be welcomed back with handcuffs rather than handshakes.

The new U.S. regime intends to focus on deporting those with criminal backgrounds and other undocumented persons which number in the millions.
