By Aaron Humes: The Association of Beneficiaries and Retired Public Officers (ABRPO) continues to pressure the Government of Belize to dissolve the Public Sector Workers Trust (PSWT) and pay public sector workers affected by the 1995 wage freeze the outstanding funds in dividends from shares in Belize Telemedia Limited.
Some 248 public officers affected by the freeze have died, according to president Hubert Enriquez, and many others have been waiting for benefits from the estimated $8 million available.
Despite several meetings with Government officials including Prime Minister John Briceño and the appointment of a protector of the Trust, there has been little movement, with a court case stalled in the Court of Appeal by a splinter group and little movement on the dissolution of the Trust, which the ABRPO argues has done little to support the affected public officers. We’ll have more on this later on.
