By Breaking Belize News Staff: Corey Dean Betson, a 23-year-old boat captain from Mahogany Street, is out on bail following allegations of aggravated assault during a fight last week.

Betson appeared unrepresented before a Magistrate, accused of assaulting Jarod Richards Mitchelle on January 17, 2024, along West Collet Canal. Initially charged with common assault, Betson pleaded guilty but explained that he was defending a friend who was surrounded by a crowd when the altercation escalated.

The Magistrate rejected Betson’s guilty plea, citing the explanation provided. With no objection to bail from the prosecution, Betson was granted bail of $300, which he successfully met.

Betson is scheduled to return to court on March 26, 2025, when he is expected to receive disclosure in the case.
